Bahamas Weddings

The 100,000 square mile archipelago of the Bahamas is located in the Atlantic Ocean, north of the Caribbean and Cuba, and east of Florida and the United States. The Bahamas has seven hundred islands, and two thousand uninhabited islands and quays. In the Bahamas, you will find the third longest barrier reef in the world, and some of the clearest waters on earth with a visibility of 200 meters, making it an ideal location for romantic weddings.

Lucayan Indians inhabited the Bahamas during the 10th century. When Christopher Columbus arrived, he made them slaves, and along with his crew wiped out the tribes with the diseases they brought along. The Bahamas was a favorite passage and hunting ground for pirates and wreckers during the 1600s. The many islands scattered and ineffective legislation made it easy for Spanish Galleons and other foreigners and conquerors to pass through.

The people inhabiting the Bahamas are a mix of European and African influences, which is seen in their culture. Music is a recognized way of life for Bahamians as they use this in celebration and self-expression; their local rhythmic music is known as Junkanoo. The locals are also very religious people; the Bahamas actually has one of the highest numbers of places of worship in the world. More than 80% of Bahamians are Anglican Christian, followed by Baptists and Roman Catholics. A minority of Bahamians, especially in the south and east part of the islands, practice a religion similar to voodoo called Obeah.

The Bahamas is a fast developing country and one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean. Tourism is a main driving force in the economy, and the tourism industry employs half of the labor force. Industrial and agricultural sectors are minor players in the Bahamian economy.

There are about 700 islands to be found in the Bahamas, each with its own culture and diversity found in the people and atmosphere of the place. Of those 700, only 30 are inhabited. There are 14 main islands, namely Nassau or Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island, and The Out Islands which consist of The Abacos, Acklins and Crooked Island, Andros, Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Eleuthera and Harbour Island, The Exumas, Inagua, Long Island, Mayaguana, and San Salvador.

Nassau, Bahamas’ capital, is located on New Providence Island. Nassau has a population of around 211,000, accounting for roughly 70% of the entire population in the Bahamas. In Nassau, you will find a cosmopolitan city with many international influences. Colonial architecture is also prevalent, along with old cathedrals, fortresses, and Victorian mansions. The harbor is also one of the popular attractions. Nassau is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Bahamas, as it is also known for its vibrant nightlife. The parliament square downtown of Nassau is the seat of Bahamian government, as there is no local government that rules the city.

Located in the northern most tip of the Bahamas is the Grand Bahama. It is also the one of the most populated and industrial islands. It is known for many ecological wonders as well as man made establishments. The Grand Bahama’s population is over 50,000. Tourism is a main driving force in the Grand Bahama, although Venezuela’s oil bunker facility and Hong Kong’s transshipment port situated there also contribute to the economy. Freeport and Lucaya are popular cities in the Grand Bahama island, and also where one can find large hotel chains, miles of beaches, and the main ship harbor. There are many botanical gardens to be found in Grand Bahama.

The Out Islands are called aptly so, because they are the most geographically remote in the Bahamas archipelago. The Abacos, which stretches for 120 miles, is known for the boating and sailing community, thus the many marinas found throughout. It is made up of Little Abaco and Greater Abaco, and other islands, named: Elbow Cay, Lubbers Quarters Cay, Wood Cay, Green Turtle Cay, Great Guana Cay, Man-o-War Cay, Gorda Cay, Umbrella Cay, Stranger’s Cay, Great Stirrup Cay, Moore’s Island, Walker’s Cay, and Sandy Point. Each cay in the Abacos possesses a unique culture and personality. Major industries in the Abacos are tourism, fishing, boat making, and banking.

Acklins and Crooked Island form another part of the Out Islands, located in the shallow waters of the Bight of Acklins. Crooked Island is covers 76 square miles, while Acklins is 120 square miles. The population of both islands combined is just around 800. Castle Island and Long Cay are the smaller ones in this island family. Acklins is known to be very quiet and not commercialized as the rest of the Bahamas. Crooked Island was said to have a sweet distinct flowery smell which Columbus noted about it. It is also a quiet island, but home to a variety of wildlife. Colonel Hill is the main town in Crooked Island.

It is known as the bonefishing capital of the world, and is also popular for having one of the largest reefs in the northern hemisphere. Three smaller islands comprise the vicinity of Andros Island: North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros. The population is over 6,000; and most of the people are located in North Andros, Congo Town, and South Andros. Andros Island has retained its natural beauty, it is not as commercialized as other areas in the Bahamas. The island is also known for Androsia, a type of fabric that is produced locally and sold around the Bahamas. Lucayans and pirates used to occupy Andros Island.

The Berry Islands is another family of 30 islands and more than 100 cays, located in the Bahamas’ northwestern area. The Berry Islands comprises a total of 30 square miles, and is also known as the Fish Bowl of the Bahamas as well as the Billfish capital of the Bahamas. Fishing is a popular attraction, and aside from Billfish there is also a rich assortment of game fish including grouper, tuna, tiger fish, yellowtail snapper, king mackerel and wahoo. In the northern tip of the Berry Islands lies Great Harbour Cay; which, stretching for 13 kilometers is the second largest island in the area. Little Stirrup Cay is known as Coco Cay, and is being leased by the Royal Caribbean International.

Bimini is yet another chain of islands in the Out Islands composed of North Bimini and South Bimini. It is only 40 kilometers from Miami, making it the closest point from the Bahamas to the United States. Bimini has a population of just about 1,600. North Bimini attracts more tourists than South Bimini; it is where the shops, hotels, restaurants, marinas and attractions are located. South Bimini, on the other hand, is home to the world renowned Bimini Biological Field Station, also known as Shark Lab, which has made a name for itself because of marine biology research. Snorkeling and scuba diving are popular activities in Bimini Island; there are also many shipwrecks to be seen while diving.

The 70 mile long stretch of Cat Island is home to the highest point in the Bahamas, called Mount Alvernia. Cat Island is a quiet and sleepy island, with many hills, cliffs, and tropical forests. The population is about 1,700. Cat Island is relatively undisturbed; one can find many chuches in old architectural designs. The residents of Cat Island are followers of Obeah. Main towns in the island are Arthur’s Town, Port Howe, and Orange Creek.

The Exumas have a collective population of about 4,000. The largest city is George Town. The Exumas are a favorite spot for fishing, sailing, and yachting as well as cave exploring and diving. Fishing and farming are important players in the local economy; tourism just coming in third. Many of the beaches in the Exumas are protected by the Exuma National Land and Sea Park. Popular inhabited islands include Fowl Cay, Musha Cay, Staniel Cay, and Iguana Cay. Shroud Cay, although uninhabited, is also one of the popular destinations in the Exumas.

Inagua is comprised of Little Inagua and Great Inague, and all together stretch for 596 square meters. The Great Inagua is a world famous habitat for flamingoes and other exotic birds. The only town found is Matthew Town, which is home to an 1870 lighthouse and the Morton Salt Company salt production facility. The facility produces more than 500,000 pounds of salt per year; it is a chief product of Great Inagua. Little Inagua covers 30 square miles, and has a land and sea park. Many goats and donkeys live in the island of Little Inagua.

Long Island is an 80 mile stretch of beach, and is located southeast of the Exumas. San Salvador is known for the Pigeon Creek Archeological Site and the Gerace Research Center. The many beaches are a favorite destination for snorkeling and diving. Traditions

The culture of the Bahamians is very diverse; it has embraced a little bit of the various settlers in history, including the Puritans, the British Loyalists, Africans, Americans, Greeks, Syrian and Chinese. Largely, the culture is made up of African and European influence; this can be seen in the wedding traditions that they practice. Since the Bahamas are located in the Caribbean, many wedding customs follow the Caribbean style, which is also mainly a mix of African and European. For a Bahamian themed wedding, you can do the following local traditions; feel free to alter them to your desired wedding themes:

1. Music is an integral part of the Bahamian culture. Junaknoo music, which is indigenous to the area, will give your wedding a taste of Bahamian tradition. Junkanoo is actually a form of street carnival music, played on carnivals that occur on December 26 and January 1. It is recognized throughout the Bahamas. There are 76 Junkanoo groups in the Bahamas that you can hire for use in your wedding reception. Reggae is also a popular choice for music in the area.

2. Customarily, the bride and groom dress in their finest clothes. This is one occasion for Caribbean locals to show off their best clothing to the rest of the villagers.

3. Invitations are not necessary for Caribbean themed weddings; the weddings are open to anyone who is willing to come and watch.

4. The father of the bride walks her down the aisle; sometimes it is both parents.

5. Caribbean locals do not make use of a best man at weddings, unlike many popular American and Spanish wedding traditions.

6. The wedding ceremony ends with the groom lifting the veil of the bride, kissing her, to the cheers and joyful shouts of the wedding spectators.

7. Church bells ring throughout the island to signify the marriage of the bride and groom.

8. Reflective of the vibrant and lively culture, wedding receptions are often filled with drink, dance, and music, often lasting all night long. Common foods served are spicy chicken jerky, curried goat, conch fritters and fried plantains.

9. Typical wedding gifts include quilts and home furniture.

Marriage licenses are issued by the Registrar General in Nassau (unless you decide to be married on one of the other islands, and in that case you can go to the Registrar General's office on the island of your choice) which is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. The phone number is (242) 322-3316, and the fax number is (242) 322-5553.

Here are the requirements to get married in the Bahamas.

  1. You and your beloved must both be in the Bahamas at the time you are applying for a marriage license.
  2. Unlike some places there is no blood test necessary to be married in the Bahamas.
  3. There is a one day waiting period to get married. So if you arrive on say a Tuesday, and then you go and apply for a marriage license on Wednesday and are approved then you can also be married on Wednesday.
  4. If either of you has been married before then you will need to present a certified or original copy of your divorce decree when applying for your marriage license.
  5. If either of you is widowed, then you will need present a certified copy or original copy of the death certificate of your spouse in order to be married in the Bahamas.
  6. If either one of you is unmarried and either a citizen or residing in the United States then you will need to get a document verifying this fact from a U.S. Consul at the American Embassy in the Bahamas. You can also do this in front of a Bahamas notary public. The cost is $30 each.
  7. If either of you is unmarried and a resident of a country other than the United States then you will need to get a notarized document from a notary in your country verifying that you are resident of said country.
  8. A current passport or photo ID.
  9. Something verifying the date you arrived in the Bahamas such as a plane ticket stubb for example.
  10. If you want to be married on one of the other islands outside of New Providence then you can obtain your license at the Registrar General's office on the island of your choice rather than going to Nassau.
  11. You must have two witnesses present during the ceremony.
  12. If you want to be married in a Catholic ceremony then you will need to provide additional documentation such as a baptismal certificate, confirmation papers, and affidavits that say you are both free to marry. You will also need to give three to six months advance notice as well as participate in a pre-cana course.

The fee for a marriage license in the Bahamas is $100, and the fee for the marriage certificate itself is $25. Being prepared is important so make sure that you arrive at the Registrar General's office with any and all documents necessary as this will make getting your marriage license that much smoother. It is also a good idea to call ahead of time and make sure that there are no new requirements as they can change at any time.

Insider Tips

1. Book your wedding early. The Bahamas is a popular location for destination weddings, and venues can easily be filled. Once you have finalized the date, start scouting for venues, accommodation and reception areas and services that fit in your budget, make calls, and book.

2. Oversee all the details of the wedding until the day itself. Even if you hire a wedding planner or coordinator, make sure to check even just the major details. Always have a plan B.

3. Send out invitations early. Destination weddings require most people to take leaves off work, and sending invites early would allow them ample time to take care of their travel documents and get time off to attend the wedding.

4. Inform your guests of what activities they may do before or after the wedding. You may suggest an itinerary, and it would also be helpful to them if you gave an idea more or less how much they will be spending.

5. The Bahamas is complete with services, from banking to legal, so no need to worry about these. Although bank hours may be different from island to island, usual hours Monday to Thursday are 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.

6. Electricity in the Bahamas is 120 volts; American appliances are compatible.

7. For those who wish to drive, remember that British driving rules are followed.
