Marriage License Requirements
You can go to the Attorney General's office that is in the Government Administration Complex at Wickham's Cay I, Road Town, Tortola and apply for a marriage license the day you arrive in the British Virgin Islands if you want to. Then you will have a three day waiting period before you can actually get married, but since that is a short time and allows for any special preparations it makes sense. The cost for a marriage license in the British Virgin Islands is $110 dollars in British Virgin Islands postage stamps if you have been there less than fifteen days before the planned date of your wedding ceremony. If you have been there for fifteen days or more then the cost goes down to $50 in British Virgin Islands postage stamps, cutting the cost by over half. So it is more expensive if you have only been in the British Virgin Islands for a few days. It behooves you if you want to save on expenses to plan your wedding before you actually arrive on the island. If you work it out so that you have three weeks for example in the British Virgin Islands, you can cut the costs and still have time to enjoy your nuptuals, and maybe even a honeymoon if you like. Keep in mind also these are not the only costs, there is also the costs for the wedding ceremony itself which is listed below.
When you apply for your marriage license in the British Virgin Islands you will need to provide your passport as proof of when you arrived and your identity. If you have been divorced or your spouse died you will need to provide originals or certified copies of your divorce papers or death certificate as applicable in your situation.
Two witnesses are required to be married in the British Virgin Islands both when you apply for your marriage license and at the ceremony, although they do not have to be the same two people for each of these. If for some reason the two who witnessed your marriage application cannot be at the ceremony, you can select two locals to be the witnesses at your ceremony if necessary.
Once you have applied for your marriage license then you must go to the Registrar General's Office to schedule for an appointment for when you want to be married, both the date and the time. This office is situated on Main Street, Road Town, Tortola above the post office. They are open 9:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday, and 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturdays. The cost is $35 if you are married in the registrar's office, and $100 if you get married elsewhere such as a church or on the beach for example.
If you are planning a church wedding you will need to contact the minister of the church of your choice to find out what their requirements are to be married there as it is individual for each church.
