Why Fiji?

Marriage License Requirements

You can be married anywhere you like with few restrictions unlike other places around the world. There are no blood tests, and no residency requirements to fulfill. While you do have paperwork that must be submitted it is not any more onerous than here in the United States.

You can apply for a license as soon as you arrive in Fiji if you like. There are Registrar General offices in Suva, Nadi or Lautoka. Lautoka is seventeen miles form the Nadi airport which may make it the best choice if you want to apply for a marriage license right away.

In order to apply for a marriage license you will need to provide the following documents to the Registrar General.

A current passport with a valid visitor's permit. Without this you cannot prove that you are legally on the islands of Fiji which of course you don't want. A certified or original copy of your birth certificate. If you have been divorced in the last five years, a certified or original copy of your divorce decree. If your divorce was over five years ago then you do not have to provide your divorce decree. If you are a widow, a certified or orginal copy of the death certificate of your spouse. If you are under the age of 21, then you will need an officially witnessed consent from your father. If your father has passed away then your mother can do this. The names and presence of the two witnesses who are twenty-one years or older who will be at your wedding ceremony. You can obtain the marriage license application from the Head Office of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Suva, or the Divisional Registrar Offices either in Labasa or Lautoka or any other district office in Fiji. The office in Suva is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The office in Lautoka is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm, and the office in Labasa is open 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday through Friday. Once your license is issued it is valid for 28 days only.

The marriage fees are in Fiji dollars and you can pay in cash, postal money order or bank cheque. The fees are as follows.

The application for a special license is F$20.25. A marriage that is performed within the registry and which includes the marriage certificate costs F$22.50. If your marriage is performed outside the registry office or after registry office hours and is performed by the Registrar General or District Registrar then the cost is F$30.68. A notice of your intention to marry is F$5.63. As an option a Tapa designed marriage certificate is available for those who would like one at a cost of F$15.50. If you have a civil marriage officer solemnise your marriage outside of the registry office ie at a resort then the cost is F$30.00. Since requirements can change it is a good idea to contact the Registrar General's office prior to going to Fiji to be sure nothing has changed. The address, phone and fax numbers for the office in Suva are Registrar General's Office, Ground Floor, Suvavou House, Victoria parade, Suva, Phone: (670) 3315280, Fax: (679) 3304917.
