Fort Knox is a United States Army post in Kentucky south of Louisville and north of Elizabethtown. The base, 109,000 acres, covers parts of Bullitt, Hardin, and Meade counties, with Hardin county receiving the largest benefit, economically. It currently holds the U.S. Army Armor Center, the U.S. Army Armor School, and is used by both the Army and the Marine Corps to train crews on the M1 Abrams main battle tank. The history of the US Army's Cavalry and Armored forces, and of General George S. Patton's career, can be found at the General George Patton Museum, which is located at Fort Knox. Parts of the base in Hardin and Meade Counties form a census-designated place (CDP), which had a population of 12,377 at the 2000 census.

Fort Knox has become an almost colloquial term in the English language, its name associated with high-tech security, impregnability and excess amounts of wealth. This occurrence has become proliferated due to the use of the site in media such as the 1959 James Bond novel Goldfinger by Ian Fleming, and the 1964 movie of the same name and its appearance in the 1981 comedy film Stripes, both of which utilize the large-scale security of the fort in the main narrative.

Why Fort Knox?

Marriage License Requirements

Obtaining a marriage license is an important step in making your marriage legal. Follow these guidelines on how to obtain a marriage license if you plan to wed in Kentucky.

Step1

Apply for the marriage license in person at any county courthouse. Both bride and groom must be present. Residency in Kentucky is not required.

Step2

Present proof of age and identity. A driver's license, military identification card or passport are acceptable forms of identification for this purpose.

Step3

Fill out the application and sign it in the presence of the county clerk. Applicants may also be asked to provide Social Security numbers, dates of birth for both parties, previous marriage information and names and birthplaces of applicants' parents.

Step4

Pay the license fee and head to the altar. There is no waiting period and licenses are valid for 30 days.

Step5

If either applicant has been married previously, bring the certified document that ended his or her last marriage, such as a divorce decree, annulment paper or death certificate.

How To Get There

Get in

US 31W runs roughly North/South next to Fort Knox; drivers may access the Brandenburg Station Road, Chaffee Avenue, and Wilson Road Gates, as they travel North to South, respectively. 31W connects Elizabethtown 15 minutes to the South, and Louisville about 60 minutes to the North. Further East runs I65, also connecting Elizabethtown and Louisville. KY 313, running East/West, brings in traffic from I-65 to the east, via exit 102.

Get around

Not much effort seems to have been made to make navigating around post easy; most signs for buildings use difficult-to-read "military speak" (for example, the Leader's Club sign is marked: DIRECTORATE OF MORALE, WELFARE, AND RECREATION, and in relatively tiny text at the bottom: Leader's Club). However, almost every street intersection is clearly labeled, though the existing signs differ for some roads from the names given by Google Maps.

The Fort Knox MWR Guidebook (available at several locations around post) has probably the best map of post available to the average visitor.

Get out

The nearest large town with a little more to offer is Lousiville, while Lexington is further away, but still a reasonable drive.
