Frankfort is a city in the U.S. commonwealth of Kentucky that serves as the state capital and the county seat of Franklin County. The population was 27,741 at the 2000 census; by population, it is the 5th smallest state capital in the United States.

Frankfort is the principal city of the Frankfort Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Franklin and Anderson counties.

Marriage License Requirements

Want to get married in Kentucky? You'll need a driver's license and social security card. You'll also need to provide a certified copy of a divorce decree or death certificate if you've been married before. There is no residency requirement unless you are a minor, then your parents must be residents of Kentucky in order to get married there.

There is no waiting period for a marriage license in Kentucky. Your fee will be around $36 and you'll need to bring cash, money order or a cashier's check to pay the marriage license fee. There is no option for covenant marriage, proxy marriage or cousin marriages.

Kentucky will not recognize cousin marriages even if they were legal in another state. Common law marriage is also not recognized in Kentucky. As for same-sex marriages, citizens in Kentucky passed an amendment to the state constitution banning same-sex marriages in 2004.

If you are under the age of 18, you need parental consent and you'll also need to present custody papers if your parents are divorced. You need the consent form to be witnessed by at least two people and then it will need to be sworn to the deputy clerk. If you are pregnant, you can waive parental permission by getting a district court order. Applicants under 16 need parental permission and a court order.

I-64 connects Frankfort with Lexington to the east and Louisville to the west. US 60 (which connects to Versailles) parallels I-64 most of its route through Kentucky. US 127 South connects Frankfort with the Blue Grass Pkwy and Harrodsburg to the south. US 127 North, a winding road, is the shortest route to Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. US 460 offers a short route to Georgetown (the Toyota plant) and I-75.
