Picking the Perfect Wedding Gown

Picking your wedding gown is one of the most important choices you will make in your lifetime. It can also be one of the most difficult whether you have the budget for an elaborate and expensive gown or not. Choosing the right gown will be one of the most critical choices you make when it comes to your wedding.

If you were like most little girls then you fantasized about your wedding day and how you would be dressed on this most important occasion. Whether you wanted to have a dress like Glenda the good witch in the Wizard of Oz, or if you were a Disney fan and coveted one like Cinderella's or Sleeping Beauty's, one thing is for sure, you dreamed of looking your very best. Because there is so much pressure to look your best at your wedding, choosing your wedding gown can be one of the more stressful things associated with planning a wedding. However, it doesn't have to be.

Maybe you want to do something different than everyone else, after all, not every bride wants a traditional wedding, or a traditional gown. If that is the case you might consider shopping at places you wouldn't normally think of for your wedding gown. Some places to think about are formal wear stores, and even stores where international clothing is sold. Cocktail or even a dress you'd think of as a prom dress might hold to key to the perfect gown for you. Keep in mind too that you are not limited to the color white. While traditionally brides began being married in white in the Victorian era and the color was chosen because it represented the virginity and purity of the bride, social mores have changed. A white wedding dress no longer exclusively holds this meaning for modern brides. Some brides in the last ten years or so have chosen to wear black, and in China brides still wear red.

If you know you want to wear a color other than a white wedding gown, you might consider doing some research on what brides wear in other countries to give you ideas for colors and even styles. Who knows you might decide to wear a colorful Indian sari! In Morrocco brides favor bright yellow and green, yellow because it scares away the evil eye, and green because it brings good luck. In Spain brides wear a black gown and mantilla, the color saying they will be devoted to their husband until death. So doing a little research into the colors of gowns in other countries as well as the meaning of these colors for our international neighbors can open up a whole new avenue of ideas when it comes to choosing the perfect wedding gown. And if cost is a factor, doing the research may even save you money since you could choose gowns other than traditional wedding gowns!

A final thing you want to keep in mind is the theme of your wedding. If you're having a beach wedding, then a formal gown will probably not be practical. This leaves open the possibility of choosing a flowered gown, maybe even one that is not floor length, and you may even be able to choose a material other than the traditional silk or satin. However, if you are having a more formal and traditional wedding, while you could choose a color other than white you are probably restricted to floor length formal gowns made from materials such as satin, silk, organza and lace. The theme will often help to dictate what sort of gown you wear at your wedding taking at least a bit of the stress off.

Keeping an open mind will be critical during this time of choosing the perfect wedding gown, but doing so will help you to find one that fits both your personality, the theme of your wedding, and your budget.
