Lexington (officially Lexington-Fayette Urban County) is the second-largest city in Kentucky and the 66th largest in the United States. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World," it is located in the heart of Kentucky's Bluegrass region. The population was estimated at 270,789 in 2006, anchoring a metropolitan area of 436,684 people and a Combined Statistical Area of 645,006 people.

Lexington ranks 10th among US cities in college education rate, with 39.5% of residents having at least a Bachelor's Degree. It is home to the headquarters of Lexmark International, the Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland race course, Red Mile race course, Transylvania University, and the University of Kentucky.

Lexington has been selected to be the site of the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games.

Lexington has traditionally been dominated by the horse industry; in recent decades it has also been heavily influenced by the University of Kentucky, the flagship state university and largest employer in the city. The university sits immediately south of downtown Lexington, while the large open horse farms of old have gradually retreated from the city under the onslaught of suburbia. The horse industry has given Lexington a claim to fame, a scenic countryside, and Keeneland Racecourse. UK has given it a college town atmosphere and a richer and more diverse culture than one might expect from its size and location. The city is landlocked and is not penetrated by any interstate, but it is nonetheless the urban mecca for all of central Kentucky.

How To Get There

Get in

By Car

Travellers usually access Lexington via one of the two major interstates that arc around the northern and eastern borders of the city. I-64 runs from east to west, most notably connecting Lexington with the largest city in Kentucky, Louisville, to the west. I-75 runs north-south, connecting Lexington with Cincinnati and Knoxville respectively. Neither interstate actually penetrates into the city, so motorists must take one of many possible exits that lead inbound. Most major streets radiate from downtown in a spoke-and-wheel pattern with New Circle Road (State Route 4) running in a complete circle around the city. The major roads often change names depending on which surrounding county seat they lead to. Note that New Circle Road, an early experiment in urban circumferential expressways, was first built with inadequate zoning so that about 1/4 of it to this day is heavily developed with commercial usage and is not limited access, while the rest is 55-mph freeway with on/off ramps.

The Lexington area is also served by the Martha Layne Collins Bluegrass Parkway, originating at I-65 in Elizabethtown, and the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway, which starts just east of Lexington and provides access to the Appalachian region.

By Bus

The Greyhound station is on New Circle Road on the north side of town, several miles from most attractions.

By Train

There is no passenger train service to Lexington. The nearest would be Amtrak's Cardinal, with stations in Maysville, and in Cincinnati, Ohio.

By Plane

  • Blue Grass Airport, 4000 Terminal Drive; Phone: (859) 425-3114. A medium sized regional airport (with International facilities including Customs) which has service from all of the major American carriers and daily non-stop service to at least 13 cities. It deposits passengers directly adjacent to Keeneland Race Course and a few miles from downtown. There is bus service, although likely only once per hour. All major brands of car rental agencies have service here, and taxis and hotel shuttles are plentiful.

By Boat

Lexington has neither rivers nor large bodies of water. It is often said that Lexington is the largest or second largest city in North America without a navigable body of water. The old Town Branch, basically a creek upon which Lexington was founded, now runs in a pipe below Vine Street, surfacing to the west of Rupp Arena. There are municipal water reservoirs out Richmond Road at New Circle Road, and further out at Jacobson Park, but nothing other than paddleboats at the park exists for boating within Lexington.

Get around

Bus service is provided by Lextran, which provides service from the downtown Transit Center to most parts of town and the airport. Downtown Lexington is compact and easily navigated by foot or bicycle, but the most convenient way to get around town is by car. Cars can be rented at the airport or at several locations in the city. Taxis are expensive and must be ordered in advance. There is a taxi stand in front of the airport.

Get out

  • Louisville is 79 miles from Lexington.
  • Frankfort (Kentucky)
  • Cincinnati is 82 miles from Lexington.
