Marriage License Requirements
Here are the requirements for getting married in Puerto Rico.
If you are a citizen of the United States, then you must bring current photo identification. If you are a citizen of any other country, then you will need to bring your current passport. Most people carry some form of identification these days, but in the event that yours has expired or been lost, be sure you get a new one before trying to get married in Puerto Rico. One of the less common requirements these days is a requirement in Puerto Rico, and that requirement is a blood test. You must have a blood test done at a laboratory that is federally certified in the United States or Puerto Rico, and you must do this within 10 days of the date you want to get married. To be married in Puerto Rico you must also obtain a marriage license. When you do so, you purchase two license stamps which cost in total $30. To do this, you both have to go to the City Court Office together and buy the license. If either of you is under the age of 21 then you must have the permission of your parents or legal guardians to marry. Also, if you live in, or are a citizen of another country then you must provide a notarized document stating that you are not already married. If either of you are divorced or widowed, you must provide a certified copy of your divorce decree or death certificate at this time as well. For more information you can either call (787)728-7980 or write Department of Health, Demographic Registry Office, Box 11854, Fernandez Juncos Station, Santurce, PR 00910. If you decide to write then allow for at least 2 months for a response. It takes about 10 days to get your marriage license. Unlike in the United States, you can get your marriage certificate before you are actually married, and you do this prior to getting the marriage license. You get your marriage certificate before your wedding day from the Puerto Rico Department of Health. For more information, you can call (787) 767-9120. Finally, you and your beloved will need to have your marriage certificate, and blood tests signed and certified by a physician from Puerto Rico. You then must get married within 14 days. # If you have children with you that are from prior marriages, or children of which you are both parents but that were born prior to the wedding, you will need to provide the original birth certificate for them. In order to be married in Puerto Rico, you and your beloved must also have two witnesses over the age of twenty-one in attendance at your ceremony for the marriage to be legal. Once you have all the necessary documents then you and your beloved have to go to the Marriage License Bureau where you will have all your documents approved. Once your documents have been approved, then you have the option of being married in the free ceremony which is held weekly at the Judicial Center, or you have your hotel set up a private ceremony that can cost anywhere from $150-$200.
